THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL AND THE LOOMING RISE OF ANOTHER

THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL AND THE LOOMING RISE OF ANOTHER

"Freedom has many flaws and our democracy is imperfect but we have                 never had to put up a wall to keep our people in "
                                                       John Fitzgerald Kennedy
                                                          President USA 1961--1963

To many of us watching from the outside, the American spirit represents the ideal which we all continually hope for, and wished our leaders (especially in the third world countries ) would aspire to. Indeed no one can argue against the fact that as the leader of the Free World, America has the right and might to build its own walls if, and when it chooses to.

But when the spirit and the passion behind the call for the erection of that kind of wall is blurred along the lines of diabolical Puritanism and inflammable global impact -- when that spirit and passion is mixed in a crucible of racism, demagoguery and divisiveness, it leaves us scurrying to the annals of history in search of precedents.

The most recent that comes to mind is the Berlin wall. The second world war, as we learnt was a brutal affair. About a decade after the war ended, a new high in global suspicions, a growing cold war between the US and USSR, and dangerous diplomatic intrigues yielded a new world order: The Eastern bloc led by the USSR and WARSAW Pact Nations, and the Western bloc championed by the US, UK, France and NATO .

The USSR took charge of East Germany, (ironically called the German Democratic Republic) which at the time was the most advanced Communist economy. However, the USSR's Iron fist suppressed real democracy and stifled the economy in East Germany.

On the other hand, West Germany, (Federal Republic of Germany)had the opportunity to re-develop its economy and set itself on a path to economic growth. In the East, a certain paranoia developed. The walls of the Kremlin and the halls of government in East Germany became troubled. Deep suspicions grew deeper. The East German government prodded by the Kremlin decided to build an 'antifascist protective wall'.

The East German propaganda machine worked on its people. They created a state of perpetual fear -- fear of military aggression and political interference from the west. In simple terms, the story sold to the East German people (although they really had no say in the matter), was that the Berlin wall would protect East Germany from being invaded by West Germany and its NATO allies. In 1961, the Berlin wall was erected.

Today, the most advanced economy in the world, America is being preyed upon by the grand marketers of fear, divisiveness and racism embodied in one lugubrious presidential candidate doling out sick vituperations and eerie jokes aimed at entrenching a climate of fear and suspiciousness in all of America.

Today the most advanced economy in the world is placed under enormous pressure by one presidential candidate running on the fuel of national fear and appealing to a macabre patriotism that is globally symbolic of fascism.

Today the most advanced economy in the world, with arguably the most advanced military apparatus in the world is belittled by one presidential candidate calling for the erection of a wall to prevent the invasion by 'economic refugees' and 'scant terrorism' . This is a visual we hope all of America will hold in their sights for a long time to come, because if that candidate squirms his way into the white house, the emergence of a new global chaos may be totally inevitable.

Let's back-track for a minute. So in 1961 the Berlin wall was erected ostensibly to keep West Germany and its allies from invading East Germany. Once the wall was in place the real reason behind the wall became evident. It was to prevent East Germans from fleeing the country whose economy was ailing and whose political ethos was stifling genuine growth and socio-economic development.

So may be in 2016 or early 2017 a wall would be erected in America (paid for by the Mexicans) ostensibly to keep the Mexican immigrants (economic refugees ) from invading America.

So may be in 2016 or early 2017 some 11 Million other undocumented immigrants whose sole purpose is to seek better economic environment for themselves and their families would be deported from America in a veiled act of economic cleansing, all in a bid to jump start the American economy.

So maybe in 2016 or early 2017 after the construction of this wall and the deportation of undocumented immigrants the American economy would immediately magically hit seventh heaven and leave the economy of China dazed in its wake.

Well unfortunately even if the wall was built today and undocumented immigrants deported today, this would have no positive impact on the American economy whatsoever. The reason is simple.

The State of America's economy is not independent of happenings in the global space. There is a global economic downturn. Any Nation whose leader cannot see this really cannot claim to have any idea of how to tackle his own country's economic problems. America's economy is in a peculiar situation. America's economy is the largest economy on the world. The American Government's expenses are the highest in the world and this did not happen as a result of Barrack Obama being President of the U.S. or Hillary Clinton being Secretary of State. To assume that either of these two personalities were the cause of America's economic woes would seriously question the present Republican Presidential candidate's understanding of the workings of a huge economy like America's.

America's federal deficit has been the subject of huge debate way before Obama even dreamt he would be President Of The United States. As a matter of fact this was one of the major issues championed by Henry Ross Perot in his campaign in 1992 for the Presidency. Perot (Independent) and Bill Clinton (Democratic) candidate, placed the Nation's economic deficit at the centre of their campaign arguments. As far back as 1992 Ross Perot had warned that the American economy would suffer catastrophically if the nation could not discipline itself and bring the National debt under control. This was as far back as 1992.

But the 1992 Presidential debates and campaign argument were not about racism and the psychological brutalization of undocumented immigrants because the major contestants understood what was important to Make America Great Again. And so a certain Bill Clinton won the elections. 8 years after, it is on record that America's record budget deficit became record budget surplus. It is on record that 22 Million new jobs were created and the country's unemployment rate and inflation really went down.

Clinton's government established a fiscal discipline and PAID OFF the America's debt. The key word here is PAID OFF not PARED. And in the 8 years of Clinton's government he did not 'build that wall', and he did not mass deport undocumented immigrants. But of course this is the less troubling side of my argument.

The more troubling side of my argument is this: If a candidate whose experience in business is characterized by corporate bankruptcy, and a twisted way of using the laws of the country to pare debt-- if that candidate manages to get into the white house he would hardly understand the intricacies of a huge economy like America's . Indeed with his mindset he would believe that once he built that wall and got rid of 11 million undocumented immigrants he would have created a brilliant economic surplus. And because he so is fixated on this, real issues that need urgent attention in American and global economics for even America to prosper would be left untended.
And God forbid, as the country begins to gradually drift into bankruptcy Americans would begin to leave America by the droves.

And because he has no idea of what global inter-relations mean, he would clamp down on America's Airports and prevent American businessmen from taking their businesses abroad. Then the real import of that candidate's desire to build 'that kind of wall' would gradually dawn on Americans: The wall would not be to keep Mexicans from coming in, rather it would be to keep Americans from going out. This candidate who is so fascinated with Russia would then gradually peel off all his pretences to democratic ideals and unleash the full weight of a new brand of communism in America.
This is a gloomy picture, and I admit a stretch of my imagination.

But maybe a little admonishing from a 1964 speech by Sir Winston Churchill would drive home a point: "The United States at this time stands at the pinnacle of power. It is a solemn moment for the American democracy. For with primacy in power is joined an awe-inspiring accountability to the future. "
Accountability to the future.

RIO 2016: THE MEANDERING ROAD TO ' SAMBA TOWN'

RIO 2016: THE MEANDERING ROAD TO ' SAMBA CITY'

As the world tees up for arguably the biggest sporting fiesta this year -- RIO 2016, every participating Nation is hoping its athletes would create magic and deliver some world class performances that would place their Nation on the map of Olympic winners.
But for many, the Road To Rio has been anything but straight :

NIGERIA:

The Nigerian Olympics team left for the Rio amidst claims of unavailability of funds to fly to team to Rio. This claim was quickly rebutted by the NOC, only another claim to resurface that Mikel Obi had supported to team with a donation of $30,000. Again, the NOC rebutted this quickly. Then again, young Mikel Obi ended up being the captain of the entire Olympic Team (27 athletes in 8 events) which had Olympic veterans like Table Tennis star Funke Oshonaike , who will be competing in her 6th Olympic. and sprint-star like Blessing Okagbare her second.
And then the team from Nigeria finally departed for RIO with the President of the Nigerian Wrestling federation declaring that the Nation should not expect any medals from the wrestling team, since members of the team were not allowed to travel with their training partners .

They left without their allowances. But of course we know Nigeria is a unique country: Soon after the kick-off of the games on the 5th of August 2016, a high powered delegation, from either the Sports Ministry or the legislature would hit Rio taking along every possible appendage (wives, girlfriends, children) , ostensibly to deliver athletes' allowances and support the team, a jamboree that's likely to cost the Nation far more than the meagre stipends the athletes are entitled to. Interestingly the team left with NO CONDOMS. Nigeria's Olympic soccer Team (rumors had it ) however, could not leave their base in the US for RIO on Tuesday 2nd August 2016 because their flight fares had not been paid.

INDIA :
Team India seems to be the most feted delegation on its way to RIO 216 this year. With high powered support from Indians across the spectrum, and equally high powered government support, Team India left for Rio on a high. Luckily for Team India, the government increased the daily allowance for each Team member from $50 to $ 100, the highest ever for Team India.

USA:

Top of the cherry tree, enjoying  the ripest , juiciest pickings is TEAM USA. No doubt athletes have to go through grueling training and competitions just to be part of team USA but with a $10,000 pocket money awaiting each athlete who makes the track and field category, and $ 5,000 for each gymnast who makes the team, many athletes are more than willing to risk breaking a limb or a vertebra just to make the team.

But team USA has even bigger incentives to go for medals. Gold medalists look forward to a pretty pot of $25,000 to take home, Silver medalists - $15,000 and Bronze medalists $ 10,000. This is a bigger incentive to perform than the Presidential handshake which athletes from some other countries are likely to get for all their efforts . The biggest incentive however is the prospect of millions of dollars in endorsement deals from top brands in America.

Azerbaijan: This Asian country which was annexed by the USSR for long periods of its existence doles out about the highest bonus to any of its athletes who wins a medal at the Olympics. The government awards a crazy $510,000 dollars to gold medalists, $225,000 for silver medalists and $ 130,000 for bronze medalists.

CHINA:

Team China may likely be the best prepared team from Asia having hit their Esporte Club Pinheiros, Sao Paulo Training camp since 22nd July, 2016 with a team strength of 411 consisting of athletes, coaches, supporting staff and officials.
The Chinese delegation will present athletes in 16 sporting areas. But getting to Rio was not free of internal frights either:

About a week before the contingent headed for Sao Paulo, China's star swimmer and world champion, Ning Zetao had a brush with the officials over the signing of a personal sponsorship deal with a dairy brand which was a rival to the National Teams dairy brand sponsors. Officials did not reveal how the matter was resolved but Ning said : "I feel honoured to be part of China's Olympic delegation..." during the unveiling of Team China on Monday 18th July in Beijing.
Although the prospect of million dollar endorsement is not as high for Team China as it is for Team USA, nonetheless Gold medalists from Team China also have a handsome $31,400 to pocket for their troubles.

RUSSIA:
Team Russia has had perhaps the biggest headaches preceding RIO 2016 with the ban of its athletes based on doping allegations. The saga went from threat of a total ban, a partial ban and finally settled on a selective ban. Finally IOC decided that only athletes who could prove they were clean would be allowed to participate.

Today Team Russia's 387 strong contingent has been pruned down to 270 in the biggest doping related sanctions in the history of the Olympics. The team is still awaiting final clearance to head for Rio. Inspite of this however, Russian gold medal prospects still look forward to a heart-gladdening $130,000 pocket comfort for all their headaches.

The Real Thrill of Rio 2016 may however be the record breaking 450,000 condoms that will make their appearance in Rio [350,000 male and 100,000 female condoms] each seeking to offer pleasure and protection to at least one of the 10,500 'sex-machines' ( approximately 42 condoms per athlete), scheduled to grace the 33 venues in Rio with their performance. Interestingly, these condoms (produced in Australia by Starpharm Holdings and Ansell Ltd.) have been designed to offer protection against the dreaded ZIKA virus.

With 17 days of intense sports activity and competition at high levels, and a background thought in each athletes mind that he/she's got at least 2 condoms to utilize per day in the carnival capital of the world, with an amazing number of cooooool Samba dames and 'swaggalicious' Samba boys to hook up with, RIO 2016 is bound to produce excitement , histories and records breakers beyond the very limited field of vision of on-field spectators and big screen audiences .

A VIEW FROM MY WINDOW: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS -- A MUST IN AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE GLOBAL VILLAGE :

A VIEW FROM MY WINDOW: POLITICAL CORRECTNESS -- A MUST IN AN INCREASINGLY DIVERSE GLOBAL VILLAGE :

During this 2016 US political debates, Republicans have consistently knocked 'political correctness', implying it's an aberration. They have done everything to undermine President Obama's commitment to 'measured considerations' , due process and his obvious desire to pursue the path of legality.

For us in the third world and Africa specifically who view and hold America's democratic process in high esteem, the consistent bashing of political correctness is not just shocking but scary.

If a powerful political congregation whose votes and actions have far reaching global consequences, regards political correctness as an aberration, how and where would they situate 'political recklessness' within the context of the recent RN and DN Conventions?

More importantly, If the Presidential Candidate of a leading political party in the U.S could call on the Intelligence Services of a rival nation just because he wants to win, this should send cold shivers right up the spines of all Americans, as well as citizens the world over. For God's sake this is just an election , not a war and to invite espionage on one's own country in order to score political points, hmmm, that's a very very dangerous call to make.

Interpreted: That candidate is threatening all of America, and by extension the rest of the world, that once he gets into office he will not tolerate objection or dissent (civil, political or legal) in any way shape or form, and if he feels even remotely that he does not enjoy the minutest support of the American Armed forces, or the members of any international alliance that the U.S is part of, he would not hesitate invite the Russians or any other willing whore to decimate the perceived enemies within.
While we watch all this drama play out right in front of our very eyes, many would ask:"How does this affect us , the rest of the world?"

The answer is simple: Suppose this particular candidate does indeed win the 2016 elections, and becomes the President of the most powerful country on earth right now, and then that man in his warped up mind for one reason or the other does not like the face or political make up of Country X in far flung Africa, or Country Y just a drive away from America, or country Z on the European continent, or even somewhere down under-- such a man would not hesitate to make a pact with 'the devil' to dispatch the government of that country, or easier still, since he controls the nuclear codes, nothing stops him from using them. This is infact the more frightening prospect. May be we should shout from all the mountain tops in our various countries: Wake up America: Obama was not the'anti-christ' , infact he still isn't -- (the impersonation of evil) many believed he would be. Certainly he did not introduce demand we all carry that feared number 666 on our persons as many had impressed on us that he would. But we are at that cross roads now people: If that next man is voted in would he be?

Let's think about this for a moment. That man has clearly told us he has no value for political correctness. He has told us he can stand in the streets right there and shoot somebody and his supporters will hail him, applaud him. He loves saying 'You're fired'. The concept of someone being fired is crystallized in his psyche. His idea of fun is 'shunting' any organized system. He has consistently said he cares not for the helpless or the homeless or the poor and needy. He cares only for himself and his team of heartless supporters. He has told the world he is not afraid to put troops on the ground anywhere. This man must not be allowed to have control of those nuclear codes. This is not a TV game show.

If we reflect deeply, the world finally disovered they had to stand up to Hitler not simply because they felt for and felt with the Jews but because they suddenly realized that what was happening to the Jews would happen to them shortly if they did not stand up to him. Well many supporters of Trump might not fathom that his abrasive, corrosive thoughts, speeches and call to action could impact them also badly, that they'd regret it sooner or later, but a fly caught in a vortex still imagines its flying free until it gets slammed against a rock.

Did I hear someone say the US congress and the US Armed forces have more sense than that? Sorry. Did you say the U.S Army? The...URussian Army? Goodbye US Armed forces-- read his lips, the man is already telling Americans he has no confidence in either the US Intelligence services or the US Armed forces for that matter.
Sadder still is, Americans believing he will create a thriving environment for employment and an environment that will help businesses grow. Well, 'you're fired' will no longer be a euphemism for being sacked. It would mean just what it means : You're fired.
And if anyone, including his most ardent supporters believe Trump will create a level playing field for all Americans, please take this fish for picking: " Politics has no place for name calling" Yes Trump didn't say that, his VP select did. The interpretation: Mr. Pence is only reaffirming what Trump has been preaching throughout his campaign-- do as I tell you, don't do as I do. You and I do not belong to the same class whoever you may be.

Does this apply to us the rest of the world directly? Well, sadly it does. It is true that everyday less powerful countries get kicked on the shin in the football field of commerce and trade, and we get outsmarted in deals at the casinos of economics and international finance but we all know that every now and then one of our own ' breaks through the glass ceiling' ( courtesy CNN and Hillary Clinton). Yes, 'every now and then' may not be enough for us but its way much better than being enslaved, and with no hope whatsoever of any of ours breaking through that glass ceiling again.

Not only will the rest of the world struggle to thrive without the conscience of political correctness to give hope for better deals to us in the third world, but there is an even greater implicit threat: Armageddon.
